Attic Insulation and Air Sealing in New Hartford, NY

Attic Insulation and Air Sealing in New Hartford, NY

Before After
Attic Insulation and Air Sealing in New Hartford, NY Attic Insulation and Air Sealing in New Hartford, NY

This attic in New Hartford, NY was underperforming due to aging insulation, air leaks, and poor ventilation (common issues that lead to heat loss, drafts, and rising energy costs). We found unsealed penetrations, gaps around the attic hatch, and exposed rim joists allowing conditioned air to escape, along with airflow problems that can contribute to moisture buildup and winter issues like ice dams.

To address this, we completed a full attic upgrade starting with insulation removal using our CoolVac machine to expose all problem areas. We then performed comprehensive air sealing throughout the attic, including key areas like the living room closet, window, and hatch. Ventilation was improved by installing baffles and properly venting the bath fan and furnace intake to the exterior. We also added insulation damming around access points and sealed the rim joists using closed-cell spray foam to eliminate critical air infiltration.

The attic was finished with R49 blown-in cellulose insulation to ensure consistent, high-performance coverage. Using materials such as cellulose insulation, vent baffles, spray foam, caulk sealants, Schedule 40 PVC, a bath fan hard pipe and wall vent duct kit, and 1/2" plywood, the result is a tightly sealed, properly ventilated attic that enhances comfort, improves energy efficiency, and supports long-term home performance.

Job Stories From Oneida County, NY
Improve Attic Efficiency and Air Sealing in Whitesboro, NY

A client in Whitesboro, NY was dealing with an underperforming attic that was driving up energy loss and causing ice dams. She reached out to Mohawk Valley Energy Solutions for a full evaluation after being referred by her neighbor.

After the inspection, we recommended removing the existing worn insulation, comprehensively air sealing, and re-insulating the attic.

The project began with the removal of all existing fiberglass insulation using a specialized insulation vacuum, ensuring a clean and controlled extraction process. Once cleared, detailed air sealing was completed around light fixtures, plumbing penetrations, and the chimney to reduce unwanted air leakage. New soffit intake vents were also installed to improve airflow and maintain proper attic ventilation.

To strengthen overall performance, rigid foam board was then added over the catwalk and covered with OSB, creating a durable walking surface while preserving proper insulation depth beneath. Then insulation dams were installed along the catwalk edges. Dense-pack cellulose was installed under the catwalk for targeted thermal improvement, followed by blown-in cellulose across the remainder of the attic to achieve an R value of 49.

The old whole-house fan and attic hatch were removed, and all affected areas were patched, textured, sanded, and painted for a clean, finished result.

With the upgrade complete, she now has a properly sealed and well-insulated attic system that helps reduce ice damming, energy loss, and stabilize indoor temperatures.

Attic Insulation & Air Sealing Upgrade Improves Home Comfort in New Hartford, NY

A client was experiencing issues with an underperforming attic that was contributing to heat loss and ice damming in New Hartford, NY. The attic had many layers of fiberglass insulation, lots of air leakage points with unsealed penetrations, gaps around the attic hatch, and exposed rim joists allowing conditioned air to escape. This created conditions for moisture buildup and winter issues such as ice dams.

To correct these issues, a full attic upgrade was completed. The process began with the removal of existing insulation using a specialized insulation vacuum, allowing for full access to problem areas. A comprehensive air sealing approach was then carried out, addressing key leakage points including wall top plates, pipe holes and junction boxes. Ventilation improvements were made by installing baffles and properly venting the bath fan and furnace intake to the exterior to ensure balanced airflow.

In the crawlspace below the rim joists were sealed using closed-cell spray foam to eliminate major air infiltration points in that crucial part of the home.

The attic was then insulated with R-49 blown-in cellulose to provide consistent, high-performance thermal coverage throughout the space.

With these improvements completed, the attic was transformed into a well sealed and properly ventilated system, improving overall comfort, energy efficiency, and long-term home performance.

Crawlspace Encapsulation Upgrade Improves Comfort in Utica, NY Home

A home in Utica, NY was experiencing cold floors, high humidity, and persistent drafts caused by an unconditioned crawlspace with exposed soil, deteriorating fiberglass insulation, and uncontrolled air movement through vents and rim joists.

To correct these issues, the crawlspace was fully prepared by removing existing fiberglass batts, eliminating the inefficient, mouse infested insulation that was no longer performing effectively. Any obstructing materials, including old cinderblocks, were also removed and disposed of to allow for a clean and accessible work area.

Once cleared, the crawlspace was converted into a controlled environment. Vent openings were sealed, and a dimpled drainage matting was installed across the floor to create a moisture break and improve subfloor conditions. TerraBlock foam insulation was then added over the entire floor surface to help stabilize temperatures above.

A heavy-duty 10 mil Gold Seal liner was installed across the floor and up the walls, mechanically fastened and sealed to create a continuous vapor and moisture barrier. This system also incorporates UltraFresh antimicrobial protection to support a cleaner crawlspace environment.

To further strengthen performance, 2 inches of closed-cell spray foam was applied along the crawlspace walls, sill plate, and rim joists, sealing major air leakage points and separating the home from outside temperature and humidity conditions.

The result is significantly lower humidity levels, warmer and more consistent floor temperatures, reduced drafts throughout the home, and improved overall comfort with reduced energy loss.

Attic Air Sealing and R-60 Cellulose Insulation Upgrade Improves Comfort in Whitesboro, NY Home

A homeowner in Whitesboro, NY reached out after noticing persistent ice dams, uneven indoor temperatures, and rising energy costs caused by an underperforming attic. The issue was traced back to aging loose-fill insulation combined with multiple hidden air leaks throughout the attic floor.

To resolve the problem, the attic was fully cleared by removing all existing loose-fill fiberglass insulation, allowing full visibility of the air leakage points and preparing the space for proper correction work. A comprehensive air sealing process followed, targeting wiring penetrations, plumbing gaps, and top plates where significant conditioned air loss was occurring. Chimney gaps were sealed with fire-resistant rock wool insulation to safely support new insulation coverage in high-heat areas.

Recessed lighting was also addressed by installing can light covers to eliminate one of the common sources of air infiltration that often impacts energy efficiency.

To improve long-term function and accessibility, an insulated catwalk system with built-in dams was installed, creating a durable walkway while maintaining proper insulation depth and performance throughout the attic.

The space was then upgraded with TruSoft blown-in cellulose insulation, installed to a settled depth of 16 inches to achieve R-60, helping create a more consistent thermal barrier across the entire attic.

For homeowners looking for home insulation services in Whitesboro, NY, this type of full attic upgrade is designed to significantly reduce energy loss, improve indoor comfort, and deliver long-term efficiency gains throughout the home.

Attic Kneewall Air Sealing and Insulation Upgrade Improves Comfort in New Hartford, NY Home

A home in New Hartford, NY was experiencing energy loss and uneven indoor temperatures caused by air leakage through the attic kneewall and poorly performing fiberglass batt insulation. The existing insulation had reached the end of its effectiveness, allowing conditioned air to escape into unconditioned attic areas.

To address this, all existing fiberglass batt insulation was removed and hauled away, clearing the space for proper air sealing and insulation work.

The kneewall area was then upgraded with 2–3 inches of closed-cell spray foam, creating a continuous air and thermal barrier to significantly reduce heat loss and air infiltration. Additional spray foam was applied around the steel I-beam in the attic to seal another major pathway for air movement and improve overall thermal control.

For added protection, a thermal barrier using intumescent paint was recommended over the spray foam to enhance fire resistance where applicable.

The result is a more tightly sealed attic system with reduced air leakage at critical points, improved temperature stability, and better overall energy performance throughout the home.
